Disobeying public standards for acceptable conduct.
Cultural relativity
The need to consider the unique characteristics of the culture in which behavior takes place.
Comorbid
When a person suffers from more than one disorder at the same time.
Biopsychosocial Model
A model that considers biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors in understanding mental disorders.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
A disorder characterized by persistent anxiety for at least six months without a specific reason.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
A disorder characterized by recurring thoughts (obsessions) that create anxiety, which is relieved by repetitive behaviors (compulsions).
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
A condition resulting from exposure to traumatic events, causing flashbacks, avoidance of reminders, and heightened arousal.
Schizophrenia
A severe psychological disorder characterized by disordered thinking, bizarre behavior, hallucinations, and an inability to distinguish reality from fantasy.
Delusional Disorder
A psychotic disorder where the primary symptom is one or more delusions.
Bipolar Disorder
A mental disorder characterized by extreme mood swings, including manic episodes and depressive episodes.
Histrionic Personality Disorder
A disorder characterized by excessive emotionality and attention-seeking behavior.
Suicide
The act of intentionally causing one’s own death, often related to mental disorders.
Dissociative Identity Disorder
A disorder characterized by the presence of two or more distinct personalities within a single individual.
Flat Affect
A lack of emotional responsiveness.
Melancholia
A severe form of depression characterized by an inability to feel pleasure.
Social Phobia
A fear of social situations where one may be scrutinized or evaluated negatively.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
A type of therapy that helps people understand the thoughts and feelings that influence behaviors.
Neurodevelopmental Disorders
Disorders that typically appear in childhood and are traced to genetic differences or atypical brain development.
