Allergic Reactions
Mild reactions include localized swelling and itchy, runny nose; severe reactions may lead to difficulty breathing, requiring an EpiPen.
Heart Attack
Symptoms include pain in the chest, radiating to the left arm, jaw pain, and indigestion. Emergency procedure involves calling 911, having the person lie down, taking aspirin, and possibly starting CPR.
Fainting
Symptoms include dizziness and lightheadedness. Have the person lie down, elevate their legs, and call 911 if necessary.
Diabetes
Low blood sugar symptoms include confusion and blurred vision; provide a glass of juice as a first aid intervention.
Stroke (FAST)
Signs include facial asymmetry, arm weakness on one side, and slurred speech. Call 911 immediately.
Seizure
Call 911, keep the person safe, roll them onto their side, and monitor until EMS arrive.
Asthma
An asthmatic attack requires the individual to use an inhaler (bronchodilator).
Shock
Have the person lie down, elevate their feet, and provide a blanket for warmth.
Bleeding Injuries
Assess the bleeding as small or large; apply pressure and pack the wound; a tourniquet may be necessary if bleeding does not stop.
Penetrating Injuries
Do not remove the object; instead, apply a dressing around it.
Amputation
Call 911, clean the area, apply a dressing, wrap the extremity, place it in a plastic bag, and put this bag in ice water.
Epistaxis (Bleeding from the Nose)
Tip the head forward and pinch the bridge of the nose; call 911 if bleeding does not stop.
Tooth Injuries
Hold by the crown, not the root; place in a container with milk, saliva, or salt water, and take to the hospital.
Eye Injuries
Clean with water from an eye washing station.
Head and Neck Injuries
Do not bend the neck.
Bites and Stings
Remove ticks with tweezers and watch for swelling or a bullseye. For bee stings, remove the stinger and monitor for allergic reactions.
Heat Related Injuries
Cool the person by spraying with cool water.
Cold Related Injuries
Treatment guidance may include warming the person.
Poison
Call poison control and 911 immediately.
Broken Bones and Sprains
Stabilize the extremity and take the person to the hospital.
Burns
Second degree or worse burns require medical attention.
