Western Dietetics
Involves the promotion of health and the prevention/treatment of illness by optimizing nutrition using scientific principles.
Western Dietetic Principles
Include adequacy, balance, energy control, nutrient density, moderation, and variety in nutrition practices.
Nutritional Medicine
A holistic approach that uses the therapeutic and preventative potential of food, diet, and micronutrients, along with traditional knowledge, to maintain and promote health.
Holistic Approach
Emphasizes the study of all aspects of a person's health, including physical, psychological, social, economic, and cultural factors.
Nutritional Medicine Principles (Additional)
Aim to optimize intake of beneficial substances, minimize exposure to harmful ones, and favor whole, natural foods with minimal processing/packaging.
Recommended Dietary Intakes (RDIs)
Guidelines that consider emotional, social, psychological needs, environmental sustainability, and biochemical individuality related to food choices.
Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs)
Apply to healthy people; adjustments are needed for malnourished individuals or those with medical problems.
NRV Usage
Recommendations are not minimum requirements, nor are they necessarily optimal intakes for individuals.
EAR (Estimated Average Requirements)
Most appropriate for developing nutritional programs for groups, like schoolchildren.
RDI or AI (Adequate Intake)
Can be used to set dietary goals for individuals when an RDI isn't available.
