Black Shirts

Mussolini’s thugs: all-volunteer militia and paramilitary wing of National Fascist Part. Made up of disgruntled former WW1 soldiers. Marched on Rome.

Treaty of Trianon

Part of the Treaty of Versailles: divided up over 2/3 Hungary.

Gabriele D’Annunzio

Poet and Italian nationalist who coined the term “mutilated victory.” Led ex-soldiers to occupy Fiume to protest Italian government giving the port to Yugoslavia.

Giacomo Matteotti

Liberal who spoke in Italian chamber of deputies condemning Fascist violence. Was murdered by Fascists.
