TETRACYCLINES
•Take on an empty stomach (1hr before or 2 hrs. after meal) or only with non dairy foods.
•Wear sunscreen and protective clothing
•Store tetracycline in dark container
•Women of childbearing age on oral contraceptives - Use alternate form of birth control
erythromycin
•Take with food if GI distress
•Report palpitations and/or fainting
•Report hearing loss, vertigo, and tinnitus
gentamicin
Report onset of tinnitus, headache, vertigo, or hearing loss to provider.
Report an increase in the output of dilute urine to provider.
ciprofloxacin
•Report CNS symptoms
•Decrease caffeine use
•Report tendon pain
•Avoid exposure to sun – use protective clothing and sunscreen
•take antacids, iron, calcium, dairy products, and sucralfate 2hr after or 6 hrs. before
•Drink 1.5 to 2 L of fluids/day
trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole
•Drink adequate water – 1200 – 1500 mL per day
•Take with food
•Oral dose- give with 8 oz water
•Report rash and hives
•Report fatigue, pallor, easy bruising, etc.
•Avoid alcohol
•For women of childbearing age on oral contraceptives – use an alternate form of contraception
Multiple drug interactions
nitrofurantoin
•Take with food or milk
•Report respiratory symptoms
•Report numbness, tingling, and weakness of extremities
•Report fatigue, easy bruising, or repeated infections
•Do not open or crush capsule
•Dilute liquid form in milk or juice and immediately rinse out mouth
ISONIAZID
Teach patient to recognize jaundice, neuropathy
RIFAMPIN
Report abdominal pain, nausea, fatigue, or jaundice promptly.
Advise no alcohol consumption during treatment.
Warn about potential permanent staining of soft contact lenses; consult an optometrist.
Report any GI symptoms to provider.
Take medication with food or open capsule into food if GI upset occurs (note: food may decrease absorption).
Advise women on oral contraceptives to use an alternate birth control method and consult their provider.
metronidazole
•Take before, with, or after meal if GI symptoms occur
•Report severe GI symptoms to MD
•Report severe CNS symptoms to MD
•Explain about darkened urine and metallic taste
•**Avoid alcohol
CHLOROQUINE
•Advise to wear sunglasses to help with visual effects
•Have them report any vision changes to the provider
•Can take just before or after a meal to help with GI symptoms
AMPHOTERICIN B
•Teach about infusion reaction
•Report increasing fatigue to MD
•Keep all lab appointments.
KETOCONAZOLE
•Report abdominal pain, jaundice, fatigue or anorexia to MD
•Take with food to minimize GI symptoms
•Do not take antacids
•Do not drive or perform hazardous activities
ACYCLOVIR
•AVOID SCRATCHING APPLICATION SITE.
•AVOID GETTING TOPICAL FORM IN EYES.
•TAKE WITH FOOD IF GI SYMPTOMS OCCUR.
•REPORT BURNING AND PAIN AT IV SITE.
•REPORT PERSISTENT SKIN SYMPTOMS.
•REPORT CNS SYMPTOMS EARLY TO MD.
