Core: more advanced societies that exploit the periphery countries
Periphery: the underdeveloped countries, produces fragile states
Semi-periphery: the in between
Dependency theory
Periphery states are dependent on core states for access to trade, technological advancements and even economic relations; jobs, wages
Hegemony - gramsci
Domination is secured through cooperation. Often manipulate lower class to believe in exploitative ideologies
Historic blocs
social, political, and economic forces united by a shared ideology to maintain a particular societal order. Views economic base + superstructure as a whole to form dominance
Dominant ideology
the ruling classes worldview is imposed as common sense on working class. Continues hegemony and historic blocs
Transnational ruling class
globally interconnected owners and controllers of capital, transnational corporations and financial institutions
