Active lifestyle
A lifestyle that integrates regular physical activities into daily routines.
Sedentary lifestyle
A lifestyle involving little or no physical activity.
Calorie balance
The relationship between energy intake and energy expenditure; maintenance occurs when intake equals expenditure.
Weight maintenance
Keeping body weight within a healthy range by balancing calories consumed with calories burned.
Weight gain
Energy consumed is greater than energy expended.
Weight loss
Energy consumed is less than energy expended.
Body Mass Index (BMI)
An estimate of body fat based on weight and height; BMI = weight(kg) / height(m)^2; categories include Underweight, Normal, and Overweight.
Energy expenditure
The total energy used by the body, including metabolic processes and physical activity.
Metabolic rate
The rate at which the body uses energy to sustain vital functions (basal metabolism).
Nutrient-dense foods
Foods that provide more nutrients per calorie than highly processed choices.
Fiber
Dietary fiber-rich foods that aid digestion and promote fullness.
Protein
Macronutrient important for satiety and maintaining muscle mass.
Skimmed milk
Low-fat dairy product used to reduce fat intake.
Calorie counting
Tracking calories consumed and calories burned to guide weight management.
Adequate sleep
Sufficient sleep as part of a healthy lifestyle and weight management.

Food habit
The pattern of how and what people eat, including when and why they eat.
