Responsible Government
A system that ensures the Prime Minister and the executive branch have the backing of the people and can only govern if they maintain the confidence of the House.
Vote of Non-confidence
A vote to determine whether the House believes the government still has the confidence to govern; if the vote fails, an election is triggered.
Whip
A party official responsible for ensuring party discipline in voting and that members vote according to party lines.
Executive Branch
The branch of government headed by the Prime Minister, responsible for enforcing laws and running the country.
Legislative Branch
The branch of government that makes laws, consisting of the House of Commons and the Senate.
Judicial Branch
The branch of government that interprets laws and administers justice, including the Supreme Court of Canada.
House of Commons
The more powerful chamber of the legislative branch, composed of Members of Parliament elected by the citizens.
Senate
A chamber of the legislative branch consisting of appointed Senators who provide input and revisions to legislation.
Prime Minister
The head of government in Canada, elected as a member of parliament and leader of the governing party.
Constitutional Decisions
Judgments made by the Supreme Court regarding the interpretation of laws and the constitution, with the power to overturn inappropriate laws.
