What is Ecology?
The study of interactions between organisms and their environment.
What is a Population?
A group of individuals of the same species living in a particular area.
What is a Community?
All the populations of different species living and interacting in a particular area.
What is an Ecosystem?
The community of organisms and the physical environment they interact with.
What is the Biosphere?
The part of Earth where life exists, including land, water, and air.
Define Habitat.
The natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other organism.
Define Niche.
The role and position a species has in its environment; how it meets its needs for food and shelter, how it survives, and how it reproduces.
What are Biotic Factors?
Living components of an ecosystem, such as plants, animals, and microorganisms.
What are Abiotic Factors?
Non-living components of an ecosystem, such as temperature, sunlight, and water.
Define Population Density.
The number of individuals per unit area or volume.
What is Population Distribution?
The pattern of spacing among individuals within a population.
What are Density-Dependent Factors?
Factors that affect population growth based on population size (e.g., competition, predation, disease).
What are Density-Independent Factors?
Factors that affect population growth regardless of population size (e.g., natural disasters, weather).
Define Carrying Capacity.
The maximum population size that an environment can sustain given available resources.
What is Exponential Growth?
Population growth under ideal conditions, resulting in a J-shaped curve.
What is Logistic Growth?
Population growth that levels off as population size approaches carrying capacity, resulting in an S-shaped curve.
Define Interspecific Competition.
Competition between different species for the same resources.
Define Intraspecific Competition.
Competition between individuals of the same species for the same resources.
What is Predation?
An interaction in which one organism (the predator) kills and eats another organism (the prey).
Define Herbivory.
An interaction in which an organism (the herbivore) eats parts of a plant or alga.
What is Symbiosis?
A close and long-term interaction between two different species.
Define Mutualism.
A symbiotic relationship in which both species benefit.
Define Commensalism.
A symbiotic relationship in which one species benefits and the other is neither harmed nor helped.
Define Parasitism.
A symbiotic relationship in which one species (the parasite) benefits and the other (the host) is harmed.
What is a Food Chain?
A linear sequence of organisms through which nutrients and energy pass as one organism eats another.
What is a Food Web?
A network of interconnected food chains in an ecosystem.
Define Trophic Level.
The position an organism occupies in a food chain or food web.
What are Producers?
Autotrophs that support all other trophic levels by producing their own food through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis.
What are Consumers?
Heterotrophs that obtain energy
