Spontaneous Generation
The idea that life can arise from non-living matter.
Cell Theory
A fundamental concept stating that all living things are composed of cells, cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things, and new cells are produced from existing cells.
Homeostasis
The maintenance of a stable internal environment.
Information Overload (in cells)
A limit to cell size where the DNA in the nucleus cannot provide enough information to direct all cell activities.
Material Exchange Problems (in cells)
A limit to cell size where the cell membrane's surface area is insufficient to transport materials in and out efficiently as volume increases.
Sexual Reproduction
Type of cell reproduction involving two parents and the fusion of gametes.
Asexual Reproduction
Type of cell reproduction involving a single parent and resulting in genetically identical offspring.
