What is a formative assessment?
An ongoing process used during learning to monitor student progress, providing continuous feedback for both the trainee and the instructor
What is the purpose of a formative assessment
To gauge the process of the trainees learning and determine whether to move on to new activities/keep practising/repeat training exercise.
To do a formative assessment accurately, instructors must be familiar with:
The required skills, knowledge and behaviours and the standard to which they must be achieved, to then determine if the trainee is progressing according to the training plan
What is a diagnostic assessment?
Measures the trainees current skills, knowledge and behaviours to identify any learning problems and devise a suitable program of learning
What is a summative assessment?
Evaluation that is conducted at the end of a course of training
What is a summative assessment used for?
Determine whether the instructional objectives (competency standards) have been achieved
What is an example of a summative assessment
An assessment to determine whether the student can be recommended for a flight test. Then the flight test is used to confirm the assessment of competency conducted by the trainer and provide feedback if deficiencies are identified.
