detect signals and initiate cellular responses (ex: ligand)

regulatory proteins

control the activity of genes or other proteins (ex: transcription factor)

defense proteins

protect the body against pathogens and toxins (ex: antigen, antibody)

storage proteins

store molecules or ions for future use (ex: ferritin)
