What is anterograde amnesia?
Inability to form new memories
Information after the injury is difficult to retain
Often last type of memory to recover
What is retrograde amnesia?
Inability to remember events before the injury
Past memories are lost
May progressively improve during recovery
What is post-traumatic amnesia?
Period after injury during which patient:
Cannot consistently form new memories
Cannot reliably recall recent events
Duration helps indicate injury severity
How do you distinguish anterograde from retrograde amnesia?
Anterograde
Trouble making memories after injury
Retrograde
Loss of memories from before injury
Mnemonic:
ANTERO = ahead/new
RETRO = back/past
