Mechanical Digestion
The physical
breaking of food into smaller pieces
(cutting, grinding, chewing).
Epiglottis
A flap of tissue that closes
off the trachea during swallowing to ensure the bolus
enters the oesophagus and not the lungs.
Peristalsis
The oesophagus uses rhythmic, wave-like
muscular contractions to squeeze the bolus
down toward the stomach.
