Qualitative Observation
An observation describing qualities or characteristics without numerical counting, such as noting that flowers are scattered on the ground or that some leaves are brown and others green.
Quantitative Observation
An observation involving numerical measurements or exact counts, such as counting 18 flowers or 9 green leaves.
Inference
An explanation or logical conclusion derived from observations, such as concluding a picture was taken on asphalt or that some leaves are older than others.
Master Switch
The primary power control on a microscope that must be turned on first before adjusting lighting or focus.
Top Light / Backlight
The microscope lighting modes used to illuminate an object.
Focusing Knob
The knob on a microscope that is turned to bring an object into clear focus.
Microscope Power
The magnification level indicated on a microscope lens, such as 2×, 4×, or 10×.
Scientific Method: Step 1
Ask a scientific question about an observed phenomenon.
Scientific Method: Step 2
Formulate a hypothesis and make a prediction.
Scientific Method: Step 3
Test the hypothesis by designing an experiment, making a model, gathering evidence, or collecting data and recording observations.
Scientific Method: Step 4
Analyze results by graphing data, making calculations, classifying information, or filling out data tables.
Scientific Method: Step 5
Draw conclusions by summarizing results to determine if the hypothesis is supported or if it must be modified.
Scientific Method: Step 6
Communicate results through science journal articles, speaking at conferences, or giving a class presentation.
