what are enzymes also known as
biological catalysts
what type of molecules are they
protein
what are enzymes?
biological catalysts that change the rate of the reactions that occur in living things
how many enzymes for one reaction
one enzyme for one reaction
what changes the the shape of an active site
high temperatures change the shaoe of active sites
what chemical does enzymes act on
enzymes act on a chemical called substrates which fits into the active site where a chemical reaction occurs
process of a enzyme chemical reactiob
enzyme + substrate - enzyme-substrate complex - enzyme and products
what factors affect enzyme levels
temperature, PH levels and substrate concentration affect enzyme levels
where do enzymes work best
enzymes work best in their optimal temperature range
enzyme rate at temperature:
at a low temperature the rate of the enzyme slows down while when the temperature increase, the enzyme activity increases to an optimal temp.
what happens when the temperature exceeds the optimal temperature?
when the temperature exceeds its optimal temp, the enzyme become de-natured - can no longer act on substrate substances
what do PH levels affect
PH levels affect enzyme activity by affecting the structure of the enzymes themselves, extreme PH levels causes the enzyme to become denatured
how does substrate concentration affect enzyme activity
at low concentration, the reaction rate is low, as you increase the amount of substrate, the reaction rate increases until the point of saturation
