Class
Laxative, stool softener
Action
Promotes incorporation of water into stool, resulting in softer fecal mass.
May also promote electrolyte and water secretion into the colon.
Therapeutic Effects
Softening and passage of stool.
Adverse Reactions/Side Effects
Rash, throat irritation, diarrhea, mild cramp.
Route/Dosage
Contraindications/Precautions
Hypersensitivity, abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting, especially when associated with fever.
Interactions
None significant.
Nursing Implication/Implementation
Administer PO with full glass of water or juice
Maybe given an empty stomach for more rapid results
Do not administer within two hours of other laxatives, especially mineral oil
Evaluation/Desired Outcomes
A soft, formed, bowel movement, usually within 24 to 48 hours
Rectal dose forms produce results within 2 to 15 minutes
Patient/Family Teaching
Advise patients that laxatives are for short term therapy
Long-term therapy may cause electrolyte, imbalance, and dependence
Encourage other forms of bowel regulation
Do not use within two hours of other laxatives
