Disordered Eating
A range of irregular eating behaviors that do not meet the criteria for a specific eating disorder.
Eating Disorders
Serious mental illnesses characterized by disturbances in eating behaviors, and related thoughts and emotions.
Anorexia Nervosa
An eating disorder characterized by self-starvation, intense fear of weight gain, and a distorted body image.
Bulimia Nervosa
Characterized by recurrent binge eating episodes followed by compensatory behaviors such as purging.
Binge Eating Disorder
Characterized by recurrent episodes of eating large quantities of food (often very quickly and to the point of discomfort); a feeling of a loss of control during the binge; experiencing shame, distress or guilt afterwards; and not regularly using unhealthy compensatory measures (e.g., purging) to counter the binge eating.
Anorexia Nervosa Diagnostic Criteria
Body weight is less than 85% of expected, intense fear of weight gain, distorted body image, and amenorrhea.
Anorexia Nervosa Warning Signs
Significant weight loss, prolonged dieting, feeling fat even after losing weight, preoccupation with food, calories, nutrition, and/or cooking, eating in isolation and exercising compulsively, and use of diuretics and laxatives to lose weight.
Bulimia Nervosa Diagnostic Criteria
Recurrent binge eating (at least twice a week for 3 months), recurrent purging, excessive exercise, fasting, and excessive concern about weight/shape.
Bulimia Nervosa Warning Signs
Using bathroom frequently after meals, preoccupation with body weight, depression or mood swings, irregular menstrual periods, dental problems, swollen cheeks or glands, heartburn.
Binge Eating Disorder Diagnostic Criteria
Recurrent binge eating, distress over-eating behaviors, no recurrent purging, absence of anorexia.
Orthorexia Nervosa
A term defined as the “fixation on righteous eating”.
Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDS)
Has replaced the term “Female Athlete Triad”.
