Three-fifths Compromise

An agreement that determined that 3 out of every 5 slaves would be counted for a state’s population.

Importation (slavery) compromise

An agreement that stated slaves could be imported until 1808.

Separation of powers

A governance model that divides governmental responsibilities between the three branches of government.

Checks and balances

A principle that limits the power of each branch in the government. 

Federalism

A system of government where power is divided between the federal and state governments.

Exclusive powers/Enumerated

Specific powers given to the federal government by the Constitution.
