What are the four main types of listening listed in the notes?
Appreciative, Empathic, Comprehensive/Active, and Critical/Analytical.
Define Appreciative listening.
Listening for pleasure and enjoyment (music, comedy, entertaining speech) and how speakers use words, humor, stories, etc.
Define Empathic listening.
Listening to provide emotional support; understanding feelings, motives, and the speaker's situation without judgment.
Define Comprehensive/Active listening.
Listening to understand the speaker's message; focus on meaning and non-verbal cues like facial expressions, gestures, posture, and vocal quality.
Define Critical/Analytical listening.
Listening to evaluate a message for acceptance or rejection; assess its logic, accuracy, and usefulness.
What are the four steps in Active Listening as outlined in the notes?
Listen carefully using all available senses; paraphrase what is heard; check understanding for accuracy; provide feedback.
What proportion of time do college students spend on listening, according to the notes?

What are the two basic parts of a sentence?
Subject and Predicate.
What is the Subject in a sentence?
The person, place, or thing performing the action; the topic of the sentence; usually a noun or pronoun.
What is the Predicate in a sentence?
Expresses action or being; the simple predicate is the verb and may include modifying words or phrases.
What additional elements can be found within the subject or predicate besides the core two parts?
Direct object, indirect object, and subject complement.
What is a Direct Object?
Receives the action of the sentence; usually a noun or pronoun; answers who or what.
What is an Indirect Object?
Indicates to whom or for whom the action is done; usually a noun or pronoun; answers to whom/to whom.
What is a Subject Complement?
Renames or describes the subject; usually a noun, pronoun, or adjective; occurs with a linking verb.
