What is Academic Writing?
Formal, objective, evidence-based writing used in schools, research, and professional settings.
Name examples of Academic Text.
Essays, reports, theses, and research papers.
What is the purpose of Academic Text?
To inform, argue, and analyze (often supported by citations and references).
What is Non-Academic Text?
Informal, personal, subjective writing. Purpose: entertain, express opinion, share experiences. Examples: blogs, diaries, social media posts.
What is Register of Language?
The level of formality in language depending on context.
What are the types of Register of Language?
Frozen, Formal, Consultative, Casual, Intimate.
What is Linguistic Register?
A variety of language used in different situations; adjusts vocabulary, tone, and style based on audience and purpose.
What are Text Structures?
The way ideas are organized in a text. Common structures include Cause and Effect, Problem-Solution, Compare-Contrast, Sequence/Chronological, Description.
What is Summarizing?
Shortening a text by keeping only the main ideas; characteristics: concise, clear, and objective.
What is a Thesis Statement?
The main idea or central argument of an essay or research paper; usually found in the introduction; must be clear, specific, and arguable.
What is Outlining?
A plan or framework of a text showing the organization of ideas (main points and supporting details).
What are the types of Outlining?
Topic Outline (keywords/phrases) and Sentence Outline (complete sentences).
