Augmentative and Alternative Communication - AAC

Define

Augmentative: supplements (augments) verbal speech

Alternative: replaces verbal speech

Different levels:

• no-tech

  • unaided

• low-tech

  • aided

  • no speech output

• mid-tech

  • recorded speech

• high-tech

  • synthesized speech

AAC Targeted Population:

• Anyone unable to talk, or someone whose speech is not intelligible or consistent

• Commonly used for children with:

  • DLD

  • Down Syndrome

  • TBI

  • ASD

  • Apraxia of speech

  • other genetic condition

• Supporting adult communication

AAC Assessment

• Start with dynamic assessment during therapy sessions

  • try something our, see how it goes, and take data!!

• to get a device, a specific AAC evaluation process is usually required

  • formal evaluation

  • trial period (LOTS of data collection)

  • SLP letter of justification

  • physician prescription

  • funding request

AAC Intervention:

Skills to teach:

• Language: What words/phrases does the person need to express?

• Operation: How does the device work?

• Social: When and how does communication happen?

Some principles of AAC intervention:

• Model, model, model!

• Involve family members

• Communicate within motivating activities

• wait patiently
