Event (Goldblatt, 2002)
A unique moment in time, celebrated with ceremony and ritual, to satisfy specific needs.
Event (Getz, 1997)
A one-time or infrequently occurring event, outside the normal programs or activities of the sponsoring body.
Events Management (Goldblatt, 2001)
A function requiring public assembly for the purpose of celebration, education, marketing, and reunion, involving a process of research, design, planning, coordinating, and evaluation.
Celebrate (4 Cs)
A gathering to mark life's milestones or accomplishments and perform rituals required by religion, culture, or society.
Commune (4 Cs)
Bringing people together to strengthen bonds of friendship and restore relationships, such as family reunions, Palarong Pambansa, or the Olympics.
Commerce (4 Cs)
Bringing people together to market or promote products, tied to the experience economy (Gilmore, 2003).
Convene (4 Cs)
Bringing people together to share and pass on knowledge among peers or colleagues, such as meetings, conventions, conferences, and seminars.
Mega Events
Events known by almost everyone that have huge media coverage, large attendance, and significant tourism and economic impact on the host city or country.
Hallmark Events
Events regularly scheduled or staged in the same location, becoming a destination or signature event for that place (e.g., Sinulog, Panagbenga).
Major Events
Events attracting 200 or more people with significant media coverage that may generate significant economic benefits (e.g., concerts, exhibitions, fairs).
Minor Events
Events attracting local audiences only and appealing to local communities or select groups (e.g., local fiesta, parade, company meetings).
Meeting (Goldblatt, 2001)
An assembly of individuals gathered to discuss items of material interest or engage in professional development.
Conference
A participatory meeting for discussion of a subject, fact-finding, problem solving, or consultation, usually of short duration and smaller in scale than congresses or conventions.
Congress
A scheduled, periodic meeting of delegates or representatives to discuss a subject; known as the European term for convention.
Convention
A general, formal meeting of a legislative body or a social/economic group to provide information and establish consent on policies.
Seminar
A lecture, presentation, and discussion led by an expert, allowing participants to share experiences in a field.
Workshop
A training session where participants develop hands-on skills and knowledge in a given field.
Exhibition
A display for public view of products or promotional materials for PR, sales, and marketing; also called an exposition, industrial show, or trade show.
Fair
A public celebration that includes commercial and civic activities.
Festival
A public celebration that conveys meaning to participants and spectators through a variety of activities.
Parade
A moving pageant of floats, bands, entertainers, and/or dignitaries.
Trade Associations
Groups composed of individuals or corporations within one specific industry (e.g., Association of Hog Raisers).
Professional Associations
Groups composed of individuals in a common profession, often created for continuing education (e.g., PAMET).
Host (Event Stakeholder)
The originator or champion of the event idea, who may be the celebrant or financier, acting as the client who gives direction.
Liaison Services (TPB)
A service provided by the Tourism Promotions Board to coordinate between international Host Committees and local counterparts, matching facility requirements and liaising with government agencies for permits.
Philippine International Convention Center (PICC)
Established in 1976 in the CCP Complex, Roxas Blvd, Manila, as Southeast Asia's first full-fledged convention center, featuring a Plenary Hall seating 3,500+ people.
PACEOS
Philippine Association of Convention and Exhibition Organizers and Suppliers, Inc., originally formed as APCEOS in 1981 and renamed in 2004.
Canton Fair Complex
A venue in Guangzhou, China, cited as possibly the largest convention center in the world by total land area (~1.1 million+ sqm construction area).
