Internet

A global network of many smaller networks that allows computers worldwide to communicate.

Internet backbone

The high-speed network infrastructure made up of high-speed networks owned by Tier 1 providers.

Tier 1 providers

Entities that own high-speed networks making up the Internet backbone and connect at Internet Exchange Points (IXPs).

Internet Exchange Points (IXPs)

Points where Tier 1 providers connect their high-speed networks.

Internet Service Provider (ISP)

An organization through which users connect to the Internet.

Public Network

A network type, such as the Internet, where a user is potentially connected to millions of other users and is represented by a cloud in network diagrams.

Private Network (LAN)

A network consisting of trusted devices, such as home, school, or workplace networks.

Private Network Connection Type (Windows)

A network connection setting in Windows used for trusted networks that allows discoverability.

Public Network Connection Type (Windows)

A network connection setting in Windows used for untrusted networks that limits sharing for safety.

Packets

Units of data in which all Internet data travels, containing address information and a portion of the data.

Routers

Devices that read packet addresses and send them along the best path to their destination.

IP address

An identifier that uniquely identifies a device on a network, allowing computers to locate each other.

IPv4

An IP address version that uses dotted-quad notation, such as 192.168.100.107.

Dotted-quad notation

The notation format used by IPv4, an example of which is 192.168.100.107.

Domain Name System (DNS)

A system that links domain names to IP addresses because domain names are easier for humans to remember.

Distributed DNS databases

Databases spread across the Internet where DNS records are stored.
