Proton
located in the nucleus, w/ a mass of about 1 amu, +1 charge
Neutron
located in the nucleus, w/ a mass of about 1 amu, no charge
Electron
located outside of the nuclus, about ½000 amu, -1 charge
Atomic Number
the number of protons an atom has. Unique for each type of atom and defines the atom
Mass Number
the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus (# of protons + # of neutrons) this number is not found on the periodic table
Isotopes
elements w/ the same number of protons (same atomic number) but different number of neutrons
Atomic Mass
Weighted average mass of all the different isotopes of a given element
Ion
a charged particle. happens when an atom gains or loses electrons
Cation
formed when an atom loses electrons (positively charged particle)
Anion
Formed when an atom gains electrons (negatively charged particle)
Polyatomic Ions
many atoms bond together to form a charged particle
Molar Mass
