Produced lists of characteristics appropriate for males, females and a list of gender neutral traits

100 Uni students had to rate wether characteristics were more desirable for men or women

• Top 20 highest rated characteristics for each gender were selected

• Final scale = 60 items

Androgyny

Displaying a balance of masculine and feminine characteristics in one’s personality

Testing androgyny

Rate each of 60 items of BSRI in scale of 1 to 7

• Count up scores for each type of trait

• Divide each by 20

• Both scores above 4.9 = androgyny

Evaluation

- Measuring gender using questionnaires is subjective and can have participant bias

- Historical bias: behaviours regarded as acceptable were different 40 years ago, so lack of temporal validity

- Cultural bias: created in US so imposed etic
