Resident Rights

Enforced by OBRA and says we need to treat our residents with quality of life; being informed, dignity, respect, and freedom

ADA (Americans with disability)

Prohibits discrimination of disability people

Neglect

Failure to provide needed care, that in results in physical, mental or emotional harm to a person

Abuse

Purposeful mistreatment that cause physical, mental, or emotional harm to a person

Minimum Data Set (MDS)

Detailed form with guidelines for assessing residents in long term care facilities

Informed Consent

Process in which a person, with a help of a doctor makes informed decisions on her/his healthcare.

Active Neglect

Purposeful failure to provide care resulting in harm to a person

Passive Neglect

Unintentionally failing to provide of care resulting in harm to a person

Negligence

actions or failure to act that result in unintended injury to a person

Physical Abuse

Any treatment intentional or not that causes harm to a person’s body

Psychological Abuse

Emotional harm caused by threatening, scaring, humiliating, intimidating, isolating, insulting a person, or treating them like a child.

Verbal Abuse

Spoken or written words, pictures, or gestures that embarrass, or insult a person

Assault

A threat to harm a person, resulting in the person feeling feeling fearful that he/she will be harmed.

Battery

Intentional touching of a person without his or her consent

Financial Abuse

Improper or illegal use of a person’s money, possessions, property, or other assets

False imprisonment

Unlawful restraint that affects a person’s freedom of movement

Involuntary Seclusion

The separation of a person against their will

Substance Abuse

Repeated use of legal or illegal substances in a way that is harmful to oneself or others

Mandated Reporters

People who are legally required to report suspected or observed abuse, or neglect.
