Epidermis
Outer layer of skin composed of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium.
Dermis
Layer of skin consisting of a papillary layer (areolar CT) and a reticular layer (dense irregular CT).
Hypodermis
Subcutaneous layer or superficial fascia located beneath the dermis; not part of the skin.
Epidermal Layers
Stratum corneum, stratum lucidum (thick skin only), stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, stratum basale.
Epidermal Cell Types
Keratinocytes, melanocytes, Langerhans' cells, Merkel cells.
Papillary Layer Structures
Tactile corpuscles, free nerve endings, dermal papilla, subpapillary plexus.
Reticular Layer Structures
Lamellar corpuscles, free nerve endings, cutaneous plexus, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, hair follicles.
Sebaceous Gland
Gland that makes sebum and releases it into a hair follicle.
Eccrine Sweat Glands
Widely distributed glands producing regular, watery sweat containing urea, salt, and water for heat regulation.
Apocrine Sweat Glands
Sweat glands found mostly in axillary and genital areas that secrete a milky type of sweat rich in proteins and fats.
