Substituted Cycloalkane
A cycloalkane in which one or more ring hydrogens have been replaced by substituents.
Cycloalkyl Group
A substituent formed by removing one hydrogen from a cycloalkane; named by replacing the -ane ending with -yl.
Choosing the Parent in a Ring-Chain Compound
Compare the number of carbons in the ring with the number in the longest attached acyclic chain to determine whether the ring or chain is the parent.
Ring-as-Parent Rule
If the ring contains at least as many carbon atoms as the longest attached carbon chain, use the ring as the parent.
Chain-as-Parent Rule
If the attached acyclic chain contains more carbon atoms than the ring, use the chain as the parent and treat the ring as a cycloalkyl substituent.
Ring-Chain Tie Rule
If the ring and the longest attached chain contain the same number of carbon atoms, use the ring as the parent.
Methylcyclopentane
A cyclopentane parent containing one methyl substituent.
Cyclopropyl Group
A three-carbon ring acting as a substituent, formed by removing one hydrogen from cyclopropane.
1-Cyclopropylbutane
A butane parent chain containing a cyclopropyl substituent at carbon 1.
Naming a Monosubstituted Cycloalkane
Name the substituent followed by the cycloalkane parent; a ring locant is normally unnecessary because the substituted ring carbon is understood to be carbon 1.
Numbering a Disubstituted Cycloalkane
Start at a substituted ring carbon and number around the ring in the direction that gives the second substituent the lowest possible locant.
Lowest-Locant Rule for Cycloalkanes
Number the ring to give its substituents the lowest possible set of locants at the first point of difference.

Ring Parent vs. Cycloalkyl Substituent
If the ring is the parent, use a cycloalkane parent name; if an acyclic chain is the parent, name the ring as a cycloalkyl substituent.
