Kinematics
Describes the study of how objects move
Motion
Change in the location of an object, measured by an observer
Distance
Total length travelled by an object in motion (in metres)
How do you determine position, using a PTG?
Read information from a graph
Direction
Line an object moves along from a particular starting point
Scalar Quantity
Only has magnitude (size)
Vector Quanitty:
Has magnitude + direction ( An arrow is placed over the variable when it reps. a vector quanitity)
Position:
Distance & Direction of an object from a particular reference point (vector quantity)
Displacement
he change in position of an object, considering both the distance and direction of the movement (vector)
Average Speed
total distance travalled divided by total time taken to travel that distance
Average velocity
the total displacement or change in position, divided by the total time for that displacement
Motion w Uniform/Constant Velocity
Motion of an object is at a constant speed in a straight line
Motion w Non-Uniform Velocity
Motion in which an objects speed changes or the object does not travel in a straight line
Position-Time Graph
Displays motion graphically, the slope is the velocity
How do you determine velocity from a PTG
Take the slope
How do you determine velocity from a VTG
read information from graph
How do you determine velocity from ATG
Find the area
How do you determine acceleration from VTG
Take the slope
How do you determine acceleration from ATG
Read information from the graph
The area under the ATG….
Gives the velocity of the object
Acceleration-Time Graph
A graph describing the motion of an object with acceleration on the vertical axis and time on the horizontal axis
Tangent
a line that touches a curve at a single point without crossing it
