the oilfield labourers
The story begins with a description of the aftermath of a fire in Kampong Umbi, where Yazid's village was razed to the ground. Amidst the devastation, Yazid is filled with conflicting emotions - mourning the loss of his home and community, yet clinging to the memories of happiness and peace they once shared.
Yazid's friend, Adam, offers him shelter for the night, but Yazid is haunted by the memories of the fire and struggles to find solace. He recalls the image of the old man who perished in the fire, a former cock fighter whose life was consumed by his passion for the sport.
The next day, Yazid joins his fellow laborers at the oilfield, where they engage in their dangerous work of climbing the derrick. Despite the risks, they continue their labor, knowing that their livelihoods depend on the oil industry, even as they acknowledge the signs of its depletion.
Tragically, the story ends with a fatal accident at the oilfield, as one of the laborers falls to his death, leaving his comrades shaken and mourning yet another loss.
