What is identified as the root cause of Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC) in Logan Basic Technique?

Pelvic, sacral, or lower extremity deficiencies or distortion.

2
New cards

What is the segmental model & how is it identified?

Described in terms of alterations of specific motion units

Identified by:

○Radiographs? Eg. Gonstead

○Clinical examination procedures Eg. Thompson

○Motion palpation Eg. Diversified

3
New cards

What is the postural model?

VSC is seen as a postural distortion

Evaluate global patterns – spinal curves and their relationship to the spine as a whole

Identified by: Radiographs

Examples: Pettibon Spinal Mechanics, Applied Spinal Bioengineering

4
New cards

What is the tonal model?

“Life is an expression of tone. Tone is the normal degree of nerve tension. Tone is expressed in

function by normal elasticity, strength, and excitability…the cause of disease is a variation in tone.”

D.D. Palmer, 1910View the spine and nervous system as a functional unit

Emphasize functional outcomes

Ex: Network Spinal Analysis, Bio Geometric Integration, Torque Release, Logan Basic

Who invented the logan basic technique?

The Logan Basic Technique was invented by Dr. Hugh Logan in the early 20th century. This chiropractic method focuses on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system, emphasizing specific adjustments to restore balance.

6
New cards

What is the premise of the logan basic technique?

Root cause of VSC is related to pelvic, sacral, or lower extremity deficiencies or distortion. VSC will not resolve unless the root causes are corrected.

7
New cards

What must the sacroiliac joint have to work effectively and how does the upper body transfer kinetic energy to the lower body?

In order for the sacroiliac joint to work effectively it must have a balanced distribution of weigh on the join along with coordinated movements of the involved muscles

Ligaments of lumbar spine and SI joint capsule blend into the thoracolumbar fascia

Through these connections the T/L fascia transfers energy from the upper to the lower body

Connections also facilitate the upper body’s contribution to the lower body

8
New cards

Why are muscles and ligaments key?

Maintain normal structural relationship. Loss of tone from fatigue or strain creates imbalance. Are key to the restoration of normal mechanics.

9
New cards

In Logan Basic mechanics, what roles do bones, muscles, and joints play?

Bones are the levers activated by muscles, and joints are the fulcrums.

10
New cards

What are the three main contacts utilized in Logan Basic Technique?

Apex, Notch, and Piriformis.

11
New cards

Where is the exact contact point located for the Apex contact in Logan Basic Technique?

Where the sacrotuberous ligament attaches to the sacrum (not on the belly of the ligament itself).

Where the sacrotuberous ligament attaches to the sacrum (not on the belly of the ligament itself).

12
New cards

What part of the thumb do we use?

The tip of the thumb and only the thumb should be in contact with the sacrum.

The tip of the thumb and only the thumb should be in contact with the sacrum.

13
New cards

How does hand positioning for an Apex contact differ between canine and equine patients?

A supported thumb is used for dogs, whereas a web and thumb contact is used for horses.

14
New cards

Describe the contact and how force is applied

Light (never heavy) and force is applied as a slight “lift” or “scoop” to the ligament.

15
New cards

What rule must be followed regarding practitioner standing position during contact?

You should always stand on the side opposite your contact for safety.

16
New cards

What is the acceptable range for the direction of force / line of correction (LOC)?

Somewhere in the 90-degree arc from the sacral apex cranially to the femoral head laterally, never crossing the midline or going below the coxofemoral joint line.

17
New cards

What is the most compatible line of correction (LOC) direction in Logan Basic Technique?

Directed cranially just lateral to the shoulder.

18
New cards

What is the standard duration of contact during a Logan Basic adjustment?

1 to 3 minutes.

19
New cards

What sequence of muscle releases indicates a successful Logan Basic contact ('The Secret')?

First, release/reduction of muscle tension just lateral to the 1st and 2nd sacral tubercles on the contact side, followed by release/reduction of muscle tension at the L/S junction on the contact side.

20
New cards

What are the 5 signs used to determine the side of contact in Logan Basic Technique?

 1. Side of rotation of the body of the lowest movable vertebra; 2. Side of high crest (PI side); 3. Side of greatest tenderness of SI joint; 4. Side of greater tension of lower paraspinal muscles; 5. Side of greatest tension of sacrotuberous ligament.

21
New cards

What two techniques can be performed simultaneously while applying pressure to the ST ligament?

Using trigger points along the lumbar spine and challenging the lumbar vertebrae.
