What is TSB experiment?

The Skinner Box. They would place a rat or pigeon in a box. In one test if the animal pressed a lever they would get positive reinforcement such as food. In another test they would get negative reinforcement like an electric shock until they pressed the lever.

How does this theoriest theory relate to criminality?

Many criminals typically outweigh the consequences vs the reward of a crime. Positive reinforcement of money possibly. Negative reinforcement of prison.

Evaluation of this theorists theory

Strengths:

  • Research support showed positive and negative reinforcement in animals changed behaviours

  • Scientific study has established cause and effect.

Limitations:

  • Humans are more complex than animals and have other social factors impacting their actions.

  • It doesn’t explain why people choose to commit crime in the first place.
