Parts of a Tooth

Crown

Part of the tooth which is covered by enamel and us visible in the mouth

Cervix

The neck of the tooth (the narrow area where the enamel of the crown joins the cementum of the root)

The Root

Helps hold the tooth in place in its bony socket

The APEX

It is the tip of the root of the tooth : nerve and blood supply enter and leave the tooth

Apical Foremen (toward the APEX)

Toward the tip of the root of the tooth which is an opening in a bone/tooth to permit the nerves & blood vessels

Apicoectomy

The surgical removal of the apical portion of the root

Periapical

Surrounding the APEX/tip of the root

Periapical Abscess

Localized around the tip of the root and is usually caused by the death of the dental pulp

Proximal Surfaces

Surfaces of the tooth which are next to the the teeth in the same arch

Mesial (proximal surface)

Toward the midline

Distal (proximal surface)

Away from the midline

Facial

Toward the lip or the cheek

Lingual

Tongue side

Occlusal

relating to the grinding or biting surfaces of the teeth, or to how the upper and lower teeth fit together when you close your mouth

Incisal edge

Sharp biting cutting edge (insicors) that cut
