Flower
The reproductive structure of flowering plants, involved in sexual reproduction.
Stamens
The male component of a flower that includes the filament and anther, which produces pollen.
Pistils
The female portion of a flower consisting of the stigma, style, and ovary.
Petals
Modified leaves that attract pollinators and protect immature stamens and pistils.
Sepals
Green leaf-like structures at the base of the petals.
Pollination
The transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma.
Fertilization
The union of male sperm and female ovules that leads to the formation of seeds.
Self pollination
The transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma of the same flower.
Cross pollination
The transfer of pollen from the anther of one plant to the stigma of another plant.
Complete flowers
Flowers that have all four parts: stamens, pistils, petals, and sepals.
Incomplete flowers
Flowers that lack one or more of the four flower parts.
Perfect flowers
Flowers that have both stamens and pistils.
Imperfect flowers
Flowers that lack either the stamen or the pistil.
Monoecious plants
Plants that have separate male and female flowers on the same plant.
Dioecious plants
Plants that have separate male and female plants.
Inflorescence
The arrangement of flowers clustered together on branches.
Florets
Individual flowers that are part of an inflorescence.
Fruits
The mature ovary containing seeds after fertilization.
Dehiscent fruits
Fruits that split open at maturity to release seeds.
Indehiscent fruits
Fruits that do not split open when mature.
Monocots
Plants that have a single seed leaf (cotyledon) in the seed.
Dicots
Plants that have two seed leaves (cotyledons) in the seed.
