What was the purpose of creating the branches of Government?
Wanted a strong national government but did not want one person or group to have too much power

Depends on how large a state´s population is
What are the powers of the legislative branch?
Make laws, declare wars, approve treaties, approve presidential appointments, impeach, override vetoes, and collect and spend taxes.
Who makes/thinks of new laws?
Legislative Branch (Congress and House of Representatives)
If a president vetoes a bill, how can it still become law?
Must pass the houses by a 2/3 majority vote
Who is apart of the Executive Branch?
The president and the cabinet (president advisors)
What is the head of the Department of Justice called? What about the other members?
Attorney General. Secretaries
What are the powers of the Executive Branch?
Enforce laws, meet with foreign leaders and negotiate treaties, appoint government officials, and sign or veto laws.
Who checks on the Legislative Branch? How?
Executive Branch by signing or vetoing bills Congress passed, Judicial Branch by declaring acts of Congress are constitutional or not

What powers does the Judicial branch have?
Interpret laws, determine whether a law is constitutional or not, determine if government officials actions are constitutional or not

What was the purpose to declare Independence?
To get away from British control and so colonies could be independent
What are our natural rights
Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness
How did King George abuse his power?
Unfair taxes, forcing colonist to house troops, not allowing trade, etc;
What can colonist do after being independent?
trade, make alliances, make peace and war, etc;
What does the first amendment state?
Freedom of speech, religion, press right to assemble, and right to petition the government
What does the second amendment say?
The right to bear arms
What does the third amendment say?
No soldier can enter your house without consent
What does the fourth amendment say?
right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures without a warrant. Warrant must be signed by judge.
What does the fifth amendment say?
The right to remain silent, right to not be witness of themself, private property cannot be used for public without cost, not be accused twice for an accusation
What does the sixth amendment say?
Right to speedy and public trial by jury, must be informed of accusation and acess to a witness and lawyer
What does the seventh amendment say?
Gives access to a civil jury, but lawsuit must be over 20 dollars
What does the eighth amendment say?
Prevents unnecessary punishments and excessive fines
What does the ninth amendment say?
Rights not included or forbidden by constitution belong to the people
What does the tenth amendment say?
Powers not given to federal government belong to the state and people
