Democratization
The process through which a country transitions from authoritarian, military dictatorship, monarchial or totalitarian rule to a democratic governance by establishing democratic institutions, expanding political participation and freedom and consolidating democratic principles.
Democratic principles
Core values consolidated during democratization, including popular sovereignty, rule of law, accountability, and respect for human rights.
Nigeria's transition
An example of a democratization process where the country moved from military rule to civilian rule.
Colonial legacy
The political, economic and social structures inherited by African states from their former colonial administrative rulers after independence.
Colonial administration
Historically authoritarian systems that did not promote democratic institutions or political participation among the people, creating a burden for future democratization.
