Distributive Property
a number in front of a group of terms will multiply all terms in the grouping individually
Expression
Numbers, symbols, and operators grouped together to show the value of something. Note that it differs from an equation because there is no equal sign and therefore cannot be solved, only simplified
Term
Each part of an expression that is separated by a + or - sign.
Coefficient
A number that multiplies a variable
Quadratic Expression
Any mathematical expression whose power or degree is two
Constant
a number without a variable; value does not change (stays constant)
Factored
Separated into factors or divisors that, when multiplied together, yield the original number
Double Distribution
Distributing terms through two sets of parentheses. Known as FOIL when used on two sets of binomials in parentheses
Variable (Math)
A letter or non-numeric symbol that represents an unknown value
Order of Operations
PEMDAS: the set order in which multi-step equations must be solved: Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (left to right), Addition and Subtraction (left to right)
Like Terms
terms with the same variable and exponent combination
Combine Like Terms
method of simplifying an algebraic expression by adding or subtracting the coefficients of like terms
Dissecting (Math)
writing numbers or expressions in expanded form
Distribution (mathematics)
Use of the distributive property where a number in front of a group of terms will multiply all terms in the grouping individually
Linear Expression
An expression that does not contain any exponents
Scale Drawings
pictures of an object drawn smaller (or larger) than they are in real life
Proportion
the relative size of elements in a design
Perimeter
the distance around the outside of a figure
Area
the amount of surface inside of a figure
Volume
measure of the total three-dimensional space contained inside an object
Net
a two-dimensional representation or pattern for a three-dimensional object
Total Surface Area
The sum of all of the areas of all faces of a solid object
Lateral Surface Area
The sum of the areas of all faces excluding the base(s) of a solid object
Surface Area
The area of the outside surface of a three-dimensional object
