Hydration
The process by which dissolved ions in solution are surrounded by water molecules.
Increased Pressure
Causes an increase in the solubility of gasses in solution.
Rate of Dissolving
The time it takes for a solute to completely dissolve in a solution.
Polar
Solutes that must be dissolved by polar solvents.
Saturated
A solution that contains the maximum amount of solute for a given temperature and pressure.
Dissociating
The process by which an ionic compound dissolves and forms ions in solution.
Solution
A homogeneous mixture that appears uniform.
Solubility
The measure of the maximum amount of solute that 100 grams of water can hold at a given temperature and pressure.
Supersaturated
A solution that contains more than the maximum amount of solute for a given temperature and pressure.
Osmosis
The movement of water across a semipermeable membrane.
Suspension
Contains particles that will settle out over time.
Equilibrium
A state of a system in which for every particle of undissolved solute that goes into solution one dissolved solute particle returns to being an undissolved solute particle.
Tyndall Effect
The ability to scatter light as it passes through a colloid or suspension.
Unsaturated
A solution that contains less than the maximum amount of solute possible for a given temperature and pressure.
Nonpolar
Solutes that must generally be dissolved by nonpolar solvents.
