Filtration

The process of stuff leaving the blood and going out into the tissue.

Reabsorption

The process of fluids from the tissues going back into the blood vessels.

Plasma

The fluid on the inside of a blood vessel.

Interstitial Fluid

Fluid outside the cells and surrounding the cells. Also known as extracellular fluid.

Endothelium

The simple squamous epithelium of a capillary wall.

Transcytosis

Crossing the entire cell involves picking up a solute on one side and transporting to the other side in a vesicle.

Sinusoids

Most permeable type of capillary with giant gaps between the cells.

Fenestrated Capillaries

Capillaries that have fenestrations (small pores) in their walls.

Continuous Capillaries

Capillaries that lack fenestrations.

Tissue Perfusion

The exchange of stuff with the extracellular fluid and the plasma.

Hydrostatic Pressure

Fluid pressure, mostly due to blood pressure, that drives fluids out of capillaries.

Oncotic Pressure

The osmotic pressure of blood, driven by proteins in the blood, that drives fluids back into capillaries.

Capillary Ends

The arterial end and the venial end.

Edema

Swelling caused by the buildup of fluid in tissues.

Lymphatic System

A system of vessels that returns extra fluid to the bloodstream, absorbs fats in the intestines, and functions as a surveillance system for the immune system.

Lymph

Fluid inside the lymphatic system.

Lymph Nodes

Structures in the lymphatic system that help clean the lymph and deal with infections.

Lymphatic Capillaries

Lymphatic vessel that picks up fluid from the tissues.

Collecting Vessels

Lymphatic vessels that collect from capillaries.

Lymphatic Trunks

Large lymphatic vessels that collect from collecting vessels.

Collecting Ducts

The largest lymphatic vessels that return lymph to the blood supply; found in the subclavian veins.
