Chloroplast
Found in plant and algae cells, captures sunlight and converts it into chemical energy which is called photosynthesis
Mitochondria
Found in most cells, converts chemical energy stored in food into usable energy for cells in the form of ATP
Cell membrane
Found in all cells, regulates what enters and exits the cell and supports and protects the cell
Cell wall
Found in prokaryotes and plant cells, supports, shapes and protects cells
Cytoplasm
The fluid inside the cell that is outside of the nucleus
Nucleus
The control center that contains most of the DNA
Nucleolus
Assembles ribosomes
Vacuoles
Found plant cells and rarely in animal cells, stores materials: water, salts, proteins, and carbs
Vesicles
store and moves material between organelles
Lysosomes
break down lipids, carbs and proteins into smaller molecules that can be used by the rest of the cell, and break down organelles that are not useful anymore
Cytoskeleton
helps animal cells maintain its shape and is involved in movement
Ribosomes
Found in all cells, where proteins are assembled
Rough ER
Has ribosomes on surface, chemically modifies proteins that were assembled on ribosomes
Smooth ER
No ribosomes on surface, makes lipids for cell membrane and helps detoxify drugs the cell is exposed to
Golgi apparatus
Modifies, sorts, and packages proteins from the ER for storage or to release outside of the cell
