What are mutations in evolution?
changes to the DNA nucleotide sequence that can create new alleles
What is a point mutation and what is the result?
a change to a singluar nucleotide or base pair
What is a frameshift mutation?
insertion or deletion of nucleotides that shift the reading frame
What is a Block Mutation?
large sections of DNA are rearranged, duplicated, deleted or moved
How does mutation contribute to evolution?
new allele produces a new phenotype that is acted upon by environmental pressures. individuals with advantageous phenotypes survive and reprodice to increase allele frequency
