Parotid salivary gland
small part within buccal and zygomatic region
Regions of the face
Frontal, orbital, nasal, infraorbital, zygomatic, buccal, oral, mental
frontal region includes
forehead (area superior to eyes) supraorbital ridge (bone above the eyebrow) glabella (smooth, slightly raised bone and skin area directly between the eyebrows)
orbital region includes
eyeball and supporting structures (orbit-boney eye socket)
nasal region includes
external nose, root of nose ( between eyes), tip (apex of the nose) naris, nasal septum (separates nares by midline, ala ( winglike cartilaginous structures that laterally bounds nares)
infraorbital region includes
inferior to orbital region lateral to nasal region
zygomatic region includes
zygomatic arch (overlies boney support for the cheek), inferior to zygomatic arch and anterior to external ear temporomandibular joint (TMJ)- where upper skull forms with joint with lower jaw
buccal region includes
soft tisue of the cheek, strong masseter muscle
oral region includes
upper and lower lips (soft tissue folds that mark the gateway of oral cavity proper-regions on the inside of jaws and teeth), mouth, oral vestibules, jaws with alveolar process and teeth, mucocutaneous junction at vermillion border (lips outlined by surrounding skin transition area) maxilla (underlies upper lip and jaw) mandible (underlies lower lip and jaw)
vermillion zone
redder, or darker with darker skin tones, than surrounding skin- possibly with localized psychologic pigmentation
philtrum
vertical groove on midline of upper lip extending inferiorly from nasal septum
tubercle of the upper lip
philtrum terminates in thicker area of midline of upper lip
labial commisure
upper and lower lips meet at each corner of the mouth
angle of mandible
sharp angle of lower jaw inferior to earlobe
mental region includes
main feature is the chin and bine underlying mental region is the mandible or lower jaw, midline of mandible marked by mandibular symphysis, mandibular ramus (on lateral part of flat plate) coronoid notch (main part of anterior border of ramus forms concave anterior curve) coronoid process (at anterior border of ramus- narrow sharp margin that terminates)
mandibular condyle with its neck
posterior border of ramus thickened and extends from angle of mandible to projection
depression of mandibular notch
between caraonid process and condyle
regions of the neck
extend from skull and lower jaw inferiorly to clavicle and sternum, can be divided into cervical triangles, sternocleidomastoid muscle ( large strap muscles located lateral on the neck with its borders dividing the neck into further regions) submandibular salivary gland, sublingual salivary gland, hyoid bone (at anterior midline and moveable and suspended in the neck- controls postion at base of tongue)
documentation rules
lymph nodes located in certain areas of the neck and when palpable (perceived or detected by touch) on patient should be recorded
thyroid cartilage
found in anterior midline and inferior to hyoid bone, prominence of the larynx (voice box)
thyroid gland
endocrine gland located within midline cervical area located inferior and lateral to thyroid cartilage at junction of larynx and trachea.
palpate order
frontal area, temples, TMJ, lymph nodes( front of ear, behind ear, at the base of the skull, angle of the jaw, under the jaw, tip of chin)
