Who is this and what are his two principles?
He was a part of a monastery who developed principles that reflect the existence of genes, chromosomes and the process of meiosis
Two principles are called: Principle of Segregation and Independent assortment.
What is sexual reproduction?
Involves the regular alternation between meiosis and fertilization
What is Meiosis? And when does it occur?
The process of nuclear division in which the chromosome number is reduced from the diploid (2n) to a haploid number (n). This creates cells with half the number of normal chromosomes.
Occurs during the production of spores, flowers, cones or similar structure.
What is Fertilization/ Syngamy?
The process which two haploid cells (gametes) fuse to from a diploid zygote
A make gamete (sperm) and a female gamete (egg) fuse to form a zygote.
What is a homologous chromosome/ homologs?
They are members of a pair of chromosomes, that one comes from one parent and one from another parent. These are present in the zygote
The interactions determines the genetic characteristic of a diploid organism.
What is the difference between Gametes and Spores?
Spores: Haploid, that can develop into an organism without reuniting with another cell. They divide Mitotically producing organism that are haploid
Gamete: Is a cell that unites with other gametes to produce a zygote
What is conjugation?
Transfer of genetic material occurs through a cytoplasmic connection that forms once the cells are in contact.
What is a haploid cell and a diploid cell?
Haploid (n)(gametes) contains a single set of chromosome. Ex: occurs at the end of meiosis/ meiosis 2, resulting in four haploid cells
Diploid: two sets of chromosomes: Meiosis occurs in diploid cells to produce a haploid gamete or spore
What is Zygotic Meiosis?
What is gametic meiosis
What is sporic meiosis?
