Dissociation
The process by which ions separate.
Electrolytes
Substances that dissolve in water to produce conducting solutions of ions.
Nonelectrolytes
Substances that do not produce ions in aqueous solutions.
Strong Electrolytes
Compounds that dissociate to a large extent into ions when dissolved in water.
Weak Electrolytes
Compounds that dissociate to a small extent into ions when dissolved in water.
Acids
Molecular compounds that form ions when dissolved in water.
Solubility Rules
Rules used to predict a compound's solubility in water.
Precipitation
Soluble reactants yield an insoluble solid product that falls out of solution.
Precipitate
An insoluble solid that forms from a reaction.
Molecular equation
All substances in the chemical equation are written using their complete formulas.
Complete ionic equation
All of the strong electrolytes are written as ions.
Net ionic equation
Only the ions undergoing change are shown, eliminating spectator ions.
Spectator ion
An ion that appears on both sides of the reaction arrow and is unchanged by the reaction.
Soluble
A compound that dissolves in water.
Insoluble
A compound that does not dissolve in water.
