what is a hypothesis?
A Statement that predicts the expected influence of the change in the independent variable on the dependent variable
What is an expected hypothesis?
Describes the connection between the variables and the expected outcome
What is a directional hypothesis? When is it used?
States exactly what the researcher expects to find including the pattern oof the results
Used when there is past research indicating the direction th e experiment will take.
What is a non directional hypothesis? When is it chosen
There will be a difference but not exactly where that difference willl be
Chosen when there is no previous research
What is a null hypothesis? What are the main 2 purposes of one?
Opposite of the experimental
NULL COVERS THE PROBABILITY THAT THE HYPOTHESIS IS INCORRECT
HELPS THE RESEARCHER STAY OBJECTIVE BY ADDING EXTRA DISTANCE BETWEEN THEMSELVES AND THE EXPERIMENTAL HYPOTHESIS
How do we analyse data
Use statistical tests
What do we do when we’ve found that our data is trustworthy
We can reject the null and say that we have found something
What do we do if our data is not trustworthy
Must accept the null and would have to say we didn’t find anything
What are the steps you use when writing a hypothesis
Identity the type of research ( experiment correlation or test o association)
Identify the variables ( IV and DV and Co variables)
Operationalise the variables ( specifically state how they are being measured or manipulated)
Decide whether the hypothesis should be directional or non directional
What is the name of this type of hypothesis there will be a relationship between the height of partcipants in cm and their UK shoe size
Correlational hypotheses
What do we do if we have previous research and we want to write a correlation hypotheses?
A DIRECTIONAL CORELATIONAL HYPOTHESES (add either a positive or negative)
