Cerebral Cortex
The outer layer of the brain, involved in complex brain functions such as thought and action.
Phrenology
A theory that proposed correlation between skull bumps and mental abilities.
Neuroplasticity
The brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections.
Action Potential
A brief change in electrical charge that travels down the axon of a neuron.
Agonist
A molecule that increases a neurotransmitter's action.
Antagonist
A molecule that inhibits or blocks a neurotransmitter's action.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
The part of the nervous system outside the brain and spinal cord, consisting of the somatic and autonomic systems.
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Consists of the brain and spinal cord.
Endocrine System
A collection of glands that produce hormones to regulate metabolism, growth, and development.
Reflex
An automatic response to a sensory stimulus.
