Gestalt Psychology
the human brain is wired to see structure, logic, and patterns that help us make sense of our world
Closure
the tendency to perceive an incomplete figure as a whole

Figure and Ground
organization of the visual field into objects that stand out from their surrondings

Proximity
tendency to organize objects nearby into a perceptual group and perceive them as a single entity

Similarity
tendency to organize objects with similar qualities as part of the same group

Depth Perception
enables us to judge distances and spatial relationships between objects

Binocular Cues
the integration of info from both eyes to create a sense of depth

Retinal Disparity
the slight difference between the images being projected on the retina

Convergence
eyes turning inward to focus on a nearby object
Monocular cues
depth cues that only require one eye

Relative clarity
clearer, sharper objects appear closer, blurry objects appear farther

Relative size
objects that cast a smaller retinal image are perceived as farther away, and larger retinal images appear closer

Texture gradient
objects with detailed textures appear closer, and objects with smoother/finer textures appear farther

Linear perspective
parellel lines appear to converge in the distance, making the point of convergence seem farther away

Interposition
one object blocking another object is perceived as closer
