Religion
Set of organized belief, practices, and systems. Belief and worship of a powerful force, personal God or supernatural deity
Theism

Belief in a God
Atheism
Rejection of a belief system that has an existence of deities or in the supernatural
Agnosticism
Philosophical view: Impossible to know which (if any) religious beliefs are true
Monotheism
Belief in one supreme deity (Christianity, Islam, Judaism)
Polytheism
Belief in multiple Gods or Goddesses (Hinduism)
Pantheism
Belief that the entire universe is divine. Every part of the universe is part of the supernatural
Animism
Non-humans like plants, animals and nature contain spirits (kind of Buddhism)
Denomination
Subgroup within religion. Operates under a common name, traditions, and other activities.
Sect
Subgroup of a religious, political, or philosophical belief system. usually an offshoot of a larger group
Fundamentalism
Form of religion that upholds belief in a strict, literal, interpretation of scripture. (Hasidic Jews)
Secular
Attitudes or other things that don't involve religion or spiritual basis.
Secularism
Principle of separation of the state of religious institutes
Doctrine
Belief or set of beliefs taught by a religion, political party, or other groups.
Faith
Complete trust and confidence in someone or something.
Strong beliefs in the doctrines of religion. Spiritual conviction rather than proof or evidence
Doubt
Uncertainty, mistrust. May or may not be true. Unconvinced. Questioning religious beliefs or teachings.
Anthropological view
Study concerned with humanity.
Anthropologist
unity, diversity of the human culture in society. done through observation, and comparison from global perspectives. Focus - Cultures of the past or present.
Sociological view
Study of social science. examining connections between social institutes and patterns of human behavior.
Historical view
Locating, examining, verifying, comparing, interpreting, and drawing conclusions from a variety of historical texts.
Theological view (Our goal)
The approach taken in this course is the theological approach.
It studies religious beliefs.
It studies religious practices.
It studies religious experiences.
Its goal is to understand what religion means to its believers and how it functions as a worldview.
