Distance
The total amount of ground an object travels during motion. Distance does not include direction and is always positive.
Displacement (Δx)
The change in an object's position from the starting point to the ending point. Displacement includes direction and is calculated by subtracting the initial position from the final position.
Position (x)
The location of an object relative to a reference point, often called the origin or zero position.
Velocity (v)
The rate at which an object's position changes over time, including both speed and direction. Velocity is calculated by dividing displacement by time.
Speed
How fast an object moves without considering direction. Speed is calculated by dividing distance by time.
Time (t)
A measurement of when an event happens or how long an event lasts. In physics, time is usually measured in seconds.
Time Interval (Δt)
The amount of time that passes between two moments. It is found by subtracting the starting time from the ending time.
Pathlength
The total length of the path an object travels regardless of direction. Pathlength is essentially the same as total distance traveled.
Constant Velocity
Motion where an object moves with the same speed and the same direction for a period of time.
Direction
The way an object moves relative to a reference point. In motion problems, direction is often shown with positive (+) or negative (−) values.
Position-Time Graph
A graph that shows how an object's position changes over time. The horizontal axis shows time, and the vertical axis shows position.
Velocity-Time Graph
A graph that shows how an object's velocity changes over time. The horizontal axis shows time, and the vertical axis shows velocity.
Slope
The steepness of a line on a graph. In a position-time graph, slope represents velocity and is calculated as rise divided by run.
Direction Change
When an object switches from moving in one direction to the opposite direction. This occurs when velocity changes from positive to negative or negative to positive.
